User Agreements

Before your beamtime, you’ll need a User Agreement with the Advanced Light Source (ALS). There are two types: a Nonproprietary User Agreement and a Proprietary User Agreement. Which one you need depends on whether you plan to publish your results.

Nonproprietary User Agreement

If your results will be published in the open literature, your research is nonproprietary, and the ALS does not charge for beamtime.

Not sure if you already have a Nonproprietary User Agreement in place? Contact Shawna Vila-Flores to check. If you don’t have one yet, Shawna will help you get started setting one up.

Proprietary User Agreement

If your work is not intended for publication, a Proprietary User Agreement gives you full control over your results. You own the data from your beamtime and can take title to any inventions made during it.

What it costs: You’ll be charged a fee based on cost recovery for ALS usage. Charges are assessed in four- or eight-hour increments.

Contact Veronica Rivas-Yoos to check whether you already have a Proprietary User Agreement in place. If you don’t have one yet, Veronica will help you get started setting one up. She can also answer questions about payment or your proprietary account balance.
