Safety At the BCSB Beamlines

AL0059 BCSB TECHNICAL STAFF

Description: Users in this category are technicians, scientific engineering associates, engineers, and scientists who run the beamlines and also perform maintenance on the beamlines.

Hazards: Liquid nitrogen; Synchrotron Radiation; computer security; ergonomics; electrical; hand tools; LOTO

Classes required (in addition to inset boxes)

EHS 170 – Cryogen Safety

ALS 5005 – Beamline Radiation Safety

AL0162 Programmers/System Admin for the BCSB beamlines

Description: Users in this category run the beamlines either remotely or locally in order to collect diffraction data only. The beamlines are controlled via a computer interface. Some sample handling using liquid nitrogen may be necessary, but no beamline maintenance is allowed.

Hazards: Liquid nitrogen; Synchrotron Radiation; computer security; ergonomics

Classes Required (in addition to inset boxes)

SEC 201 – Computer Security (required of all LBNL staff)

EHS 0059 – Ergo self-assessment computer user

Users of the BCSB beamlines (covered under the ESS)

Description: Users in this category run the beamlines either remotely or locally in order to collect diffraction data only. The beamlines are controlled via a computer interface. Some sample handling using liquid nitrogen may be necessary, but no beamline maintenance is allowed.

Hazards: Liquid nitrogen; Synchrotron Radiation

Classes Required

ALS 1001 – General Safety at the ALS

ALS 1007 – Safety Training for Crystallography Users

EHS 470 – (GERT) Radiation Training

PB0086 BCSB LAB STAFF

Description: Users in this mode generally prepare protein crystals in the BCSB wet lab 6-2105. The work includes buffer preparation, setting up crystallization plates, and freezing protein crystals in liquid nitrogen.

Hazards: Liquid nitrogen, chemicals

Classes required

ALS 1001 – General Safety at the ALS

ALS 1007 – Safety Training for Crystallography Users

SEC 201 – Computer Security (required of all LBNL staff)

EHS 348 – Chemical Hygiene
