The User Forum continues…

On April 9, 2015, Posted by , In Operations, With Comments Off on The User Forum continues…

Our second User Forum was on March 4, in which we discussed the purchase of a pixel-array detector for beamline 5.0.2. The exciting news since then is that we will be able to purchase a Pilatus 6M for the beamline. Expected delivery is in September of this year.

The third User Forum was on April 2, in which we discussed the diode-beamstop device which the BCSB is developing (allows measurement of flux during data collection), as well as the MiniKappa interlocks on beamline 5.0.2, which will now allow a full 360 rotation of omega (sometimes called Phi) with a maximum kappa angle of 55 degrees.

On December 4, 2014, Posted by , In Operations, With Comments Off on BCSB User Forum

The BCSB is planning on starting a monthly User Forum to solicit feedback from users on the current and future use of the beamlines. We’d love to hear from you about the direction that the BCSB should be taking in terms of beamline upgrades, features, and general operations. If you are interested in participating in the forum, please contact Corie Ralston.

Saphire group solves Ebola virus structures

On September 1, 2014, Posted by , In science, With Comments Off on Saphire group solves Ebola virus structures

The Ebola virus contains only 8 proteins, and yet it is versatile and deadly. How does it do so much with so little? Some of the crystal structures solved by Dr. Saphire‘s group at the BCSB beamlines shed light on how one of the Ebola proteins fits together in several different ways…

BCSB Represented at the IUCR in Montreal

The BCSB teamed up with other crystallographers at the ALS to run a booth promoting the ALS beamlines. Marc and Diane gave remote demos of the beamlines at the booth, showing how easy it was to connect to and run the BCSB beamlines remotely, even over a wireless connection at a large conference. And Diane presented a poster on the diode beamstop she has designed and built, garnering lots of interest in the device!

Several of the BCSB staff went to the 2014 ACA meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Here they are at the ALS booth, where they teamed up with many other ALS groups to promote crystallography at the ALS. The beachballs were a big hit!
