[edit] Obtaining the NX Client

NoMachine NX is a Desktop Virtualization Remote Access solution based on a comprising set of enterprise class open source technologies. Thanks to the outstanding compression, session resilience and resource management developed on top of the X-Window system, and the integration with the powerful audio, printing and resource sharing capabilities of the Unix world, NoMachine NX makes it possible to run any graphical application on any operating system across any network connection as if you were sitting in front of your computer. (from www.nomachines.com)

The BCSB has purchased a multiuser license for NoMachines NX. It has been installed on bcsb-nx.als.lbl.gov The intent is to allow our remote users to login from outside the lab and do data processing on the data collected on the BCBS beamlines.

In order to use this service, the free NoMachines NX client must be installed on the system used to connect to the server. This software is available at http://www.nomachine.com/download.php

[edit] Connecting to the BCSB NX Server

Configuring the NX client is relatively simple. There are several details that must be setup before use. From the configuration gui, the server host needs to be set to bcsb-nx.als.lbl.gov on port 22. Desktop should be "Unix/KDE". Login and password are your bcsb-ldap ones. The shell should be set up automatically for new accounts, but check to be sure the profile for your shell (.tcshrc or .bashrc) is set up according to: Remote_Data_Collection#Path

[edit] Server Setup

bcsb-nx.als.lbl.gov has a lot of processing power. It has:

4 2Ghz quadcore processors: total 16 cores

/programs contains all the standard processing software.

The following directories map to the /data partions on the beamlines.

/data/bl501 /data/bl502 /data/bl503 /data/bl821 /data/bl822

[edit] Processing Software

Processing data remotely is no different than local (with the exception of some issues with HKL2000 when zooming and unzooming. We recommend that you do not zoom until this is fixed). Infomation can be found here Processing Data
